Thanks for joining me on my mission to uplift the hair loss community! I can’t wait to share with you what I’ve been up to! This quarter I received an award for my advocacy and empowerment of the hair loss community, was named an ambassador for a global brand, am sharing some resources for helping to increase hair loss awareness, and helped raise funds for a charity close to my heart.
Whether we’re working together through your hair loss journey in one of my Her Secret Hair salons, you’ve followed me on Instagram, are a listener to my podcast, or are a part of The She-Compass community, I’m here to walk with you on our shared journey towards hope and healing after hair loss. As always, let me know if there’s something you’d like to see or share, and read on for this quarter’s announcements!

The “Mane” Event: Helen Owens Selected as Editor’s Choice in Best of the East Bay 2025
It’s official! I’ve been named “Editor’s Choice for Best Hair Replacement Professional” in Diablo Magazine’s July 2025 issue! What a thrill to be honored for the work I do.

“Helen Owens can find solutions that leave [clients] feeling confident,” writes Diablo Magazine. To this day I’m so thankful that a condition I thought would hold me back from being my best self became a blessing for me and gave me the opportunity to help others. I take pride in restoring identity, dignity and confidence for people fighting the hair loss battle. Distinctions like these give me the freedom to continue doing what I love.
Newly Minted: Helen Owens Named Vagaro Ambassador
As a hair loss specialist, I always like to remind other hairstylists of the importance of creating a safe space for people with hair loss. Our follicly-challenged community knows how important it is to have a private space designed for comfort and discretion, not just beauty. Being in the chair of someone who can provide trauma-informed care and one-of-a-kind solutions to our specific conditions is paramount. As a user of the all-in-one salon management Vagaro platform I have connected with other hairstylists to remind them how they can be a valuable link in the hair loss solutions chain. I was thrilled when I received the distinction of being named a Vagaro Ambassador! This recognition gives me even more access to the hairstylist community through education opportunities, conferences, and one-on-one interaction. I look forward everyday to being your voice and advocate in the beauty industry.

Hair Loss Awareness Months Are Coming Soon – Get Involved!
When the months of August, September and October arrive I’m ready for the autumn season. In addition to getting my clients ready for back-to-school events and grabbing a pumpkin-spiced latte, I like to remind everyone to take action on behalf of our hair loss community. August is Hair Loss Awareness Month, September is Alopecia Awareness Month, and October highlights Trichotillomania Awareness Week.

With over 80 million people in the United States with some form of hair loss and more than 1 in 5 women experiencing hair thinning in their lifetime, we can’t speak out enough about the effects losing our hair has on our self-esteem and confidence. Here are 3 things you can do to get involved during the autumn hair loss awareness months:
Volunteer with your hair loss community. I’ve said for years that hair loss doesn’t discriminate; we’re either experiencing it ourselves or know someone who is. When we work together to educate the public about our hair loss conditions we are all better for it. Whether you’re offering your time, donation, or your emotional support to someone who may be losing their hair, your commitment matters.
Provide resources. When I started losing my hair as a child I had no one to turn to. I didn’t understand why this was happening to me nor did I have the resources to help me figure it out. When I finally did get help it was from an elderly woman in the neighborhood I called “Granny” who made theatrical wigs for some of the biggest names on Broadway. That’s when I realized I could turn my pain into purpose.
Today our hair loss community has many more resources available to us. As a hair loss specialist I like to share as many of those resources as often as I can. Check out my resource page for information on some amazing people who are helping to fight the hair loss battle.
Lead with kindness. One of the reasons providing a safe space for people with hair loss is so important to me is because I understand what it feels like to be ostracized for my hair loss condition. So I work hard to be kind to others and encourage others to do the same, especially when it comes to showing others how to respect people who are losing their hair.
Helen’s Noteworthy Non-Profit: Donor Network West
Kindness and respect are contagious; the more we practice it the more it spreads. Every day I’m honored to assist guests in my chair who may be experiencing hair loss. That includes clients who have trusted me with restoring their hair and confidence while undergoing the process of organ transplantation.

Recently I had the opportunity to partner with Donor Network West as a sponsor for their biggest fundraising event of the year. Donor Network West is a “federally designated nonprofit 501(c)3 Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) with headquarters in northern California and northern Nevada” whose mission is to “save and heal lives through organ and tissue donation for transplantation and research.”
I was honored to be a part of this event! As a woman with alopecia areata dedicated to increasing awareness about the hair loss community, connecting with Donor Network West aligns with my ongoing mission to empower others. Visit the Donor Network West donation page to learn more about supporting their mission and how you can provide the ultimate gift of organ donation.
